I think this happens a lot with first responders and caregivers/nurses/doctors. We see so much trauma and we must continue working as their caregivers, and when they die, keep moving on without being given the time to mourn their loss. It gets overwhelming. That's probably why people see "heartless" doctors and nurses. Because we see so much trauma and aren't able to process, we just have to move on to the next trauma.
